Dr Mauro Overend is supporting the IVIS 2009 Scientific Committee.

Mauro Overend is a Lecturer in Building Engineering Design at the Department of Engineering, Cambridge University. He leads the Glass & Façade Technology Research Group within the department.

Building envelopes and glass structures are becoming increasingly complex as they are engineered to fulfil a wider range of multi-faceted and often conflicting requirements. The group's research seeks to address some of the major challenges in this field, such as improving energy conservation in buildings, enhancing resistance to extreme events, and increasing the value of complex glass structures and high performance building envelopes.

The overriding principle of building engineering is to provide buildings that are stable, efficient, durable, comfortable and sustainable. The research undertaken by the group ranges from fundamental research to applied research and development in the field of structural glass and façade engineering. The projects may be subdivided into themes:

  • Structural and environmental performance of glass assemblies and facades systems
  • Integrated design / construction processes for building envelopes
  • Development and prototyping of novel components / systems

This inherently cross-disciplinary research draws upon a network of experts in relevant fields and relies on close collaboration with industrial partners.

Prof Ray Ogden

rgogden@brookes.ac.uk

Professor Ray Ogden is chairman of the International Committee for Vacuum and Advanced Insulation.

Since leaving Arup in 1990 Ray Ogden has been responsible for a wide range of research in the area of steel technology.

Ray is presently deputy head of the Department of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, and Assistant Dean responsible for Research in the departments of Architecture, Planning, Real Estate and Construction. He is director of the Corus Colorcoat Centre for the Building Envelope based at Oxford Brookes and leads a high profile research group focused on steel building design.

Ray's research specialisms include areas of building physics including novel insulation systems. Professor Ogden is holder of the SCI chair of Architectural Technology and Corus Chair of the Building Envelope.

Dr Bousmaha Baiche

bbaiche@brookes.ac.uk

Dr Bousmaha Baiche is supporting the IVIS 2009 Scientific Committee.

Bousmaha Baiche is a qualified architect currently working as a research fellow at the Technology Unit of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development, and Business Manager within the Department of Architecture.

For over ten years he has been involved in research and consultancy for materials sectors including concrete, masonry and steel, and research in construction.

Bousmaha is secretary to the International Scientific Committee for vacuum and advanced insulation.

Michael Driver

MichaelDriver@brick.org.uk

Michael Driver is directing the organisation of IVIS 2009.

Michael Driver is the Director of the Brick Development Association, based at the Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London, WC1E 7BT. www.brick.org.uk

Michael is an architect by training, with a previous career in teaching, most notably at the Canterbury University School of Architecture.

Ian Abley
+44(0)7947 621 790
abley@audacity.org

Ian Abley is assisting in the organisation of IVIS 2009 by the Brick Development Association, under the directorship of Michael Driver.

Ian Abley is an architect with considerable experience both on site and in the detailing of façade and roof construction.

In 2000 Ian and his wife Kate established www.audacity.org, a research company questioning the assumptions and limitations of the British construction industry and development sector, with an emphasis on housing and population growth.

In 2006 Ian started an Engineering Doctorate at the Centre for Innovative and Collaborative Engineering at Loughborough University, www.lboro.ac.uk/cice/, sponsored by the Modern Masonry Alliance, on www.modernmasonry.org. The theme of the EngD has developed to be "The future for masonry construction in Britain and the role of vacuum insulation technology".

The research has focused on thermal insulation and the buildability of thinner masonry constructions. There is a need for thinner cavity wall constructions with insulants capable of providing high performance for 100 years. The CICE is committed to advanced training and research in engineering and construction management. Ian's principal academic supervisor at the CICE is Dr Jacqui Glass. His industrial supervisors are Martin Clarke of the British Precast Concrete Federation and Michael Driver of the Brick Development Association.
